Sheleasa Blackwell shows off a piece of art made by her son, Corey Blackwell-Gines. Corey loved to draw, and would often go to the park where this photo was taken to sit and draw. This piece also highlights many of the other things Corey enjoyed and was passionate about. Sheleasa remembers how Corey did everything he set out to do, and accomplished every goal he made.

Sheleasa Blackwell holds multiple photos of her son, Corey Blackwell-Gines. Corey’s murder motivated Sheleasa to
get involved in gun violence prevention, including with Moms Demand Action. She also founded an organization
called “Corey’s Way of Caring” to give back to the community. Corey was a very gracious and loving person, and always giving to others. Much of the motivation behind the work the foundation does is Sheleasa’s desire for Corey
to be remembered for these traits.

Sheleasa Blackwell holds a piece of art created by her son, Corey Blackwell-Gines. Sheleasa and Corey were
extremely close, and would travel and go to concerts and games together. In 2022 Corey was killed at age 19 when
he was shot at from a passing car. Like so many murders in St. Louis, his case is still unsolved. Sheleasa still advocates for the solving of Corey’s murder, even three years later. She hasn’t given up hope that justice will one day be served.
